The Socialist Party of Ventura County stands in absolute solidarity with the ongoing strike being conducted by United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA).
For far too long, educators have been devalued and deprioritized, while wealthy capital interests seek to profit from an already underfunded public education system. Financial cutbacks have taken their toll on both students seeking a decent education, and on educators who often must provide their own materials in order for their students to succeed. The situation is only getting worse with the introduction of charter school initiatives and for-profit educational programs.
This is no way to administer a public school system or develop a sustainable educational environment for the future of our children. The privatization of public education in Los Angeles and throughout the United States should be deeply concerning to everyone, especially the millions of working-class people who depend on a publicly funded education in order to pursue a better future for themselves and their loved ones.
We will always stand by our students and our teachers. We will always stand for free and universal public education. We will always stand for equality and opportunity in the face of privatization and austerity.
